Gediminas Rimkus Rimkevičius

Highly versatile stylistically and genre-wise, Gediminas Rimkus-Rimkevičius is one of the Lithuanian composers of his generation who combines composing with other activities, such as sound engineering and producing. He is eager to experiment by combining the principles of classic and contemporary academic music with a wide array of styles in modern pop music. As a music arranger and producer, he has taken part in dozens of concerts and other artistic events as well as projects for theatre and television.

Biography

Gediminas Rimkus Rimkevičius (b. 1964 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian composer known for the versatility of his work, his ability to combine various musical genres, and his experimentation with contemporary technologies. His music combines academic mastery, Lithuanian musical heritage, and global innovations.

In 1979, he graduated from the 4th Vilnius Children’s Music School (piano class). He later studied music theory and composition at the Stasys Šimkus Higher School of Music (1979-1980) and the Juozas Tallat-Kelpša Higher School of Music in Vilnius (1980-1983). He studied composition with Prof. Eduardas Balsys (1983-1984), jazz piano at the Klaipėda Faculty of the Lithuanian State Conservatory (1984-1987), and composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LMTA) in the class of Prof. Julius Juzeliūnas (1988–1992).

In 1993, he became a laureate of the intercontinental composers’ competition “Forum-93” in Montreal. In 1994, he participated in composition courses led by Peter Maxwell Davies and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in Edinburgh, and in 1995 he undertook a traineeship at the Lyon Conservatory. In 1996, the composer taught theoretical disciplines at the LMTA. His music has been performed at concerts and festivals in Lithuania and Europe (e.g., the Huddersfield Festival), as well as in the Americas and Asia.

Over more than 40 years of creative activity, the composer has arranged dozens of works by other authors and has created and arranged music for various Lithuanian television and radio stations. He also composes extensively for theatre, produces musical projects for television, festivals, concerts, and other events. A number of the composer’s albums have been released in CD and DVD formats.

Since 1995, he has been a member of the Lithuanian Composers’ Union.
