Migloko

Quite probably the most-hyped newcomer of 2009, Migloko is a young singer from bohemian district of Lithuanian capital Vilnius who describes her music as swing/punk/swing (although a mixture of rock, r'n'b, jazz and bossa nova would be more accurate). Born into a family of artists as Miglė Vilčiauskaitė, she became famous as a word-of-mouth phenomenon in early 2009 – young hipsters immediately fell for her outlandish dress sense, experiments in photography and painting, a “don't give a damn” attitude, theatrical live shows and, of course, strong melodies and weird lyrics. Shrugging off comparisons to Amy Winehouse, the 18-year old chanteuse expanded her CV quite impressively – landing a support slot for popular French band Nouvelle Vague and selling a track for an ad of one of Lithuania's biggest mobile networks. Cafeteria Inn Legend, an album of Lithuanian hip hop producers Vaiperis and Serumas, featured a collaboration with Migloko – Lovenote, which became a „thinking man's anthem“ for the summer of 2009. Signed by record label Monaco, her material was met with nods of approval by Moscow music critics and musicians – with legendary Russian rocker Andrei Makarevitch of Mashina Vremeni fame even suggesting this Lithuanian pixie should take part in 40th anniversary gig of aforementioned band. Migloko's debut album is pencilled for an early 2010 release – hopefully proving that, for once, hype is not a dirty word.

Biography

Quite probably the most-hyped newcomer of 2009, migloko◦ is a young singer from bohemian district of Lithuanian capital Vilnius who describes her music as swing/punk/swing (although a mixture of rock, r'n'b, jazz and bossa nova would be more accurate). Born into a family of artists as Miglė Vilčiauskaitė, she became famous as a word-of-mouth phenomenon in early 2009 – young hipsters immediately fell for her outlandish dress sense, experiments in photography and painting, a „don't give a damn“ attitude, theatrical live shows and, of course, strong melodies and weird lyrics. Tales of dropping out of school and creating songs in a garage without heating did no harm to her public profile, as well, so Migloko combined playing the trendiest parties and writing songs for her solo album for most of 2009. Shrugging off comparisons to Amy Winehouse („some people even find similarities between me and Elvis Presley“), the 18-year old chanteuse expanded her CV quite impressively – landing a support slot for popular French band Nouvelle Vague, performing an electronica version of Sweeney Todd musical and selling a track for an ad of one of Lithuania's biggest mobile networks in 12 months.
