This is a piece of musique concrète, a montage of diverse sounds produced by the telephone. The composer described it as cinematographic by chance and somewhat ‘bucolic’ in character, even though the very sound source – a shrill and piercing mixture of ‘plain’ signal tones – dispels the hypnotic effect of repetitive minimalist structures. The simultaneous combination of signal tones, pulsing in different tempos, resembles Steve Reich’s early experiments and his ‘phasing’ technique.
