The oboist doesn't 'jazz away' the elements of the piece. Instead, he is so involved, so familiar with every detail and its significance in the 'construction' of the work, that one would think he wrote it himself... According to the situation - it gives a piercing, saxophone-like jazz flatness in Balakauskas' concerto, and in works by Barkauskas; is romantically harmonious, sinuous, and ‘glittering’ in Martinaitis' Gija (which seems absolutely silk-like); and has the simplicity of a Lithuanian birbynė in Juzeliūnas' Litanies.

Ilya Kaler, violin: Barkauskas, Hindemith, Martinon, Prokofiev, Ysaye
Vytautas Barkauskas Partita for violin solo
Ilya Kaler (violin)
Ongaku Records 024-103, 2002

Kaler gives thoughtful accounts of the motivically related Prelude and Postlude of Barkauskas's serial Partita, mastering the Postlude's bowing effects with enviable facility. He plays the skittish Scherzo and folky moto perpetuo Toccata with rhythmic precision and characterises the contrasting episodes of the sombre central Grave with a real sense of drama. Here is a class act, assisted by a recording of commendable clarity and presence.
